The Untrained Response of Pet Dogs to Human Epileptic Seizures

چکیده
Epilepsy is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening neurological condition which affects approximately 65 million people worldwide. There currently no reliable simple early warning seizure-onset device available, means many with unstable epilepsy live in fear of injury or sudden death the negative impact social stigmatization. If anecdotal claims that untrained dogs anticipate seizures are found to be true, they could offer readily available system. We hypothesized that, given extraordinary olfactory ability dogs, volatile organic compound exhaled by dog’s epileptic owner may constitute an trigger mechanism make react owner-directed affiliative responses pre-seizure period. Using 19 pet experience epilepsy, we exposed them odours were deemed characteristic three seizure phases, using sweat harvested from epilepsy. The delivered point immediately under non-epileptic seated dog owner’s thighs. By altering alternating emerging samples, captured before seizure, during after two nonseizure controls, able record response dogs. Our findings suggest associated odour detect this demonstrate marked increase behaviour directed at their owners. A all presentation was intense stare statistically significant, (p < 0.0029), across pre-seizure, post-seizure phases when compared control origin.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Human Epileptic Seizures
Epilepsy is often called a window to the brain because it offers a unique opportunity for scientists to study and understand the function of the circuitry of the human brain during a fairly well defined and relatively simpler state, the epileptic seizure. We have previously shown that electrical activity recorded from cerebral cortex and generated by human epileptogenic foci exhibits certain ma...

متن کاملPrediction of epileptic seizures.
For almost 40 years, neuroscientists thought that epileptic seizures began abruptly, just a few seconds before clinical attacks. There is now mounting evidence that seizures develop minutes to hours before clinical onset. This change in thinking is based on quantitative studies of long digital intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from patients being evaluated for epilepsy surge...
متن کاملPatient and caregiver quality of life in psychogenic non-epileptic seizures compared to epileptic seizures
PURPOSE Little is known about the effect of psychogenic non epileptic seizures (PNES) to caregiver quality of life (QOL), particularly as it compares to epileptic seizures (ES). We sought to characterize this effect and identify its determinants. METHODS The study population comprised of 126 ES and 33 PNES patients who underwent video EEG monitoring along with 48 and 18 caregivers respectivel...
متن کاملDetecting and localizing the foci in human epileptic seizures.
We consider the electrical signals recorded from a subdural array of electrodes placed on the pial surface of the brain for chronic evaluation of epileptic patients before surgical resection. A simple and computationally fast method to analyze the interictal phase synchrony between such electrodes is introduced and developed with the aim of detecting and localizing the foci of the epileptic sei...
